Looking for things to put on toast? These 9 delicious toast toppings will inspire you next time you want a quick breakfast or a morning snack!

You’ll often find toast on my family’s breakfast table. One of my favourite breakfasts is a classic diner-style scrambled eggs and bacon with toast on the side, but I usually reserve this for cottage weekends or visits to an actual diner. Most days, I try to reach for a healthier choice that will help keep me energized through the morning. Since I started making Cranberry Cinnamon Breakfast Bread, toast is high on my list of go-to morning foods. You’ll want to check out that recipe if you’re looking for something easy and nutritious. I only need 1 slice of this hearty, filling bread to keep me going.

What To Put On Toast

First up, I really want to emphasize that there are unlimited options when it comes to breakfast toast. One of my favourite formulas is basically a 3-way combo:  spread + fruit + something fun to jazz it up. Choose spreads like nut butters, soft cheeses, chocolate hazelnut spread, jam, fresh butter or coconut oil. Add just about any fruit, and then sprinkle with something a little extra – hemp, flax, granola, cocoa nibs, flaked sea salt, bee pollen, toasted nuts, balsamic, maple syrup or honey. Or substitute the base spread with a slice of any hard cheese you love for a whole new set of options. You can feel good about adding any of these ingredients to your morning!

If you haven’t had chia jam on your toast, I’m going to try to convince you to give it a go. It’s one of my favourite spreads and it’s both delicious and healthy. The recipe is super simple and can be made in minutes without the need for a complicated canning process. Head over to my post where I show you how to make Quick and Easy Chia Seed Jam 3 Ways – I’ve included the directions for 3 taste variations that you’ll love.

What’s The Best Toast To Use?

One of the best things about choosing a seed and nut bread like my Cranberry Cinnamon Breakfast Bread is that it holds up really well, which means you can meal prep a bunch of these toasts ahead of time and store them in the fridge for a day or two. I love seeing a selection of these when I open my fridge looking for a snack. Other hearty breads can be made in advance as well – just be sure to cover the entire slice of toast with a spread to help keep it fresh. It’s not quite the same as using a freshly-toasted slice, but the convenience can’t be beat.

Sweet Toast Topping Ideas: FAQs

What should I put on top of my toast?

Toasted bread is a great base for a variety of toppings, both sweet and savoury, so the sky’s the limit! My favourite formula to follow is: spread + main ingredient + something fun sprinkled on top, just to take it up a notch. I’ve focused on delicious sweet flavour combos in this post to inspire you. Use my Sweet Toast Topping Ideas Chart to make your own creative combos!

What can you put on sweet toast?

If you’re using regular bread, I like to let the toppings themselves add a touch of sweetness. Think about sliced fruit or berries on top of a nut or soft cheese spread. Or start with a layer of chia jam or another all-fruit jam, and go from there. If you’re using bread that’s a little sweeter itself, like a cinnamon raisin loaf, you can start with an unsweetened layer, like nut butter or a soft cheese. Add sliced apple or pear, and an optional drizzle of honey or sprinkle of cocoa nibs, depending on how sweet you want to go.

What to put on toast to make it taste better?

My first ingredient with toast is always a spread. You can choose something sweet like chia or regular jam. Another option is a nut or seed butter, or a spreadable cheese like cream or goat cheese. But don’t stop there! Build on your first layer with some fresh fruit or other toppings – have a look at my Sweet Toast Topping Ideas Chart above for inspiration. Now, if you’re using a hearty loaf with lots of whole grains and seeds, you may love the taste as-is, and you can keep it simple with just a little butter.

What can you put on toast other than butter?

The list of potential toast spreads is endless! Think tahini, nut or seed butter, coconut oil, cream or goat cheese, ricotta, mascarpone cheese, brie, cottage cheese, honey, jam, chia jam, Greek yogurt, labneh, and of course chocolate hazelnut spreads like Nutella. There are savoury choices too, like mashed avocado, hummus, baba ganoush, and pesto.

What is the best thing to put on bread?

Bread is a great neutral base for just about any tasty topping you can think of. In addition to the spreads and add-ons I’ve talked about here, you can go with your favourite cheese, chutneys, eggs, sautéed mushrooms or other vegetables, roasted tomatoes or peppers, grilled fruit or veggies, sprouts, mashed beans or peas, flavoured butters, mashed tofu, or caramelized onions. Feel free to experiment, and try some sweet and savoury combinations. Choose a few ingredients you love, and you can’t go wrong!

Notes

Toast with toppings can be meal-prepped ahead for convenience. Cover the toast surface with a spread to keep it fresh before adding any other toppings. These can be kept covered in the fridge for a day or two. Hearty breads like my Healthy Cranberry Cinnamon Breakfast Bread work best if you’d like to make these ahead. It’s definitely not as nice as freshly toasted bread, but it’s great to have these ready to go when you’re hungry

Have fun and experiment with a variety of toppings. Pin my My Sweet Toast Topping Ideas chart above and get inspired!
